About Badtz-Maru
Badtz-Maru (バッドばつ丸, Baddo Batsu Maru), a male penguin with spiky hair, is one of the iconic characters created by the Japanese company Sanrio, designed by Hisato Inoue in 1993. Unlike the more famous Hello Kitty, Badtz-Maru has a unique attitude and stands out as one of the few characters marketed to all genders. Born on April 1st, Badtz-Maru is known for his rebellious expression, often seen with one eye down and sticking out his tongue.
In 2006, Badtz-Maru became the official mascot for the FIBA World Championship of basketball in Japan, with special merchandise released for the event. When he was introduced in the Strawberry News May 1993 Issue, he was recognized as Sanrio’s first “not nice” character.
Within just a few years of his debut in 1993, Badtz-Maru quickly rose in popularity, landing in the top 5 of the official Sanrio Character Popularity Poll, achieving 3rd place in 1994 and taking the 1st spot in 1996.
